Ecuador – Providing hope in the midst of tragedy! Families in Esmeraldas receive fishing kits and building materials to improve their living conditions
Esmeraldas, Ecuador - June 2025 - With a deep sense of solidarity and commitment to the most vulnerable communities in Esmeraldas, the Salesian Foundation Project North Coast, through the Salesian Province of Ecuador's “Together for Esmeraldas” Campaign, has delivered artisanal fishing kits and building materials to the areas affected by the oil spill and the recent earthquake. This humanitarian aid was channelled thanks to the invaluable support of the Salesian Mission Office in Ireland and the active collaboration of the Salesian Works in Ecuador, representing not only material relief but also a concrete act of hope, dignity and reconstruction. The kits were delivered on 11 and 12 June to several groups of fishermen on the shores of Santa Cruz and in the neighbourhood of Santa Martha II, whose livelihoods have been severely compromised by the environmental disaster caused by an oil spill. The kits include basic tools for artisanal fishing, such as nets, hooks, ropes, safety devices and other supplies. On 13 June, in the 5 de Junio neighbourhood, six families affected by the strong earthquake on 25 April received building materials to rebuild their homes. The beneficiary families come from the neighbourhoods of Santa Martha and 5 de Junio, where the earthquake caused severe structural damage to several homes. Both deliveries were attended by Fr Marco Paredes, vice-rector of the St Philip Neri Community, and economist Samuel Lozada, project technician of the Foundation.
