India – INH Salesians’ commitment: a safe and happy summer for all children

15 May 2025

(ANS - Hyderabad) - In the Province of Hyderabad, India, capital city of Telangana state in Southern India, there are hundreds of boys and girls in both rural and urban areas who are neglected by their families once they have finished school because of their parents’ terrible work schedules and lack of financial opportunities. During April, May and June when schools close and temperatures reach 43 degrees Celsius, children from disadvantaged urban neighbourhoods or slums often find themselves without recreational opportunities in their communities.

That is why every year the Salesians organise various courses in 18 Salesian communities for children from schools, parishes, youth centres and their homes in general, which take in those abandoned by their families due to extreme poverty.

The summer programme has a twofold objective: to offer a supportive solution for families in difficulty and to involve the most vulnerable children by providing them with the opportunity to participate in creative activities and personal development sessions, working on holistic growth and social skills in a pleasant environment.

The Salesians strongly believe in the power of group activities to promote collaboration and respect among peers, which is fundamental in the development of children.

The objective of this project is to provide a safe and stimulating environment during the summer holidays through activities such as:

  • the organisation of educational courses, so as to reinforce foreign language learning and computer literacy,
  • the organisation of creative workshops, such as art, dance and music,
  • the promotion of sports activities important for physical health,
  • as well as planning small trips and picnics to visit places of cultural interest in the area covered by the province.

The INH Salesian project not only contributes to improving the general well-being of young people, but also plays a crucial role in preventing the potential abandonment of children by their families and child labour exploitation.

The beneficiaries of this programme are 1,800 boys and girls between the ages of 6 and 8 from low-income families, including those living in slums.

The Salesians want to encourage members of the local community to participate as volunteers, reducing operating costs and fostering a sense of belonging, and also to organise monitoring of the activities to assess the satisfaction of the programme and improve it on the run, if necessary.

Acknowledging the significance and full Salesianity of the initiative, which seems to have come fully out of Don Bosco's educational genius, the Salesian Mission Office in Turin, Missioni Don Bosco, has also decided to sponsor it, launching a campaign among its benefactors to support it.
