The Salesians have been working in Myanmar for years, including in Mandalay, a city close to the earthquake's epicenter. Salesian institutions in the area have also suffered damage, and missionaries are working to support the most vulnerable while assessing the extent of the destruction.
"The earthquake in Myanmar has caused widespread devastation, especially in the city of Mandalay, where many buildings have been reduced to rubble. Even the Sagaing Bridge has been severely damaged," explained Fr. Edwar Sein, one of the Salesian missionaries in the country.
The Salesian community in Mandalay has been heavily affected. Their chapel sustained serious damage, and "unfortunately, two of the worshipers present were injured," added Fr. Sein. Moreover, the Salesian-run Center for Street Children also suffered severe damage. "The roof and walls collapsed, and at least one child was injured," the missionary reported.
"Misiones Salesianas," the Salesian Mission Office in Madrid, has announced that it is in contact with the Salesian communities in Myanmar to assess the damage and send aid as soon as possible.
According to experts, the 7.7-magnitude earthquake is one of the strongest ever recorded in the region. This disaster further exacerbates an already dire situation in Myanmar, which is one of the poorest countries in Asia and has been facing a severe political crisis since 2021. The ongoing instability, coupled with scarce resources, makes responding to this emergency even more challenging. Nevertheless, the military junta has already requested international assistance.
"We humbly ask for prayers for our people during this difficult time," Fr. Sein continued. "We are certain that recovery will require significant help and solidarity from the entire world."
The Salesians in Myanmar remain committed to supporting the affected population. Despite the political turmoil and this devastating natural disaster, they will not abandon the children, youth, and families in their care. Their priority will be to provide new opportunities and hope to those in need.
