The encounter was graced by Fr. Alfred Maravilla, SDB, former General Councillor for the Missions, who served as the resource speaker. In his keynote session, Fr. Alfred highlighted the centrality of the missionary spirit in Don Bosco’s charism, urging participants to rekindle their passion for bringing others closer to Christ. He emphasized that missionary zeal extends beyond international missions, calling members to cultivate a “heart on fire with love for Jesus” and the courage to step beyond their comfort zones. Fr. Alfred also led participants in an examination of conscience, challenging them to assess whether they still embody Don Bosco’s missionary spirit in their daily lives. Group discussions followed, allowing members to reflect on his insights and explore ways to live out their mission more fully.
Fr. Alfred further expounded on key outcomes of the 29th General Chapter, emphasizing faith, fidelity, and vulnerability as pillars of Salesian life. He stressed that faith anchors spiritual vitality, fidelity ensures sustained commitment to Salesian practices, and vulnerability calls for a renewed focus on marginalized youth, particularly those facing social injustice and exclusion. These values, while directed primarily at Salesians, were presented as essential for the broader Salesian Family to continue their mission effectively.
Adding to the day’s inspiration, Fr. Godofredo Atienza, FIS Salesian Family and Mission Animation Delegate, shared stories of the pioneering Salesians who established Don Bosco’s works in Victorias City. He highlighted the discipline of Br. Andrew Braggion, and the pastoral dedication of Fr. Peter John Clifford, particularly his ministry in the sacrament of reconciliation. Participants from each group later shared their reflections and commitments during a plenary session.
The encounter concluded with a solemn Eucharistic celebration, giving thanks for the day’s graces and renewing the missionary zeal of the Salesian Family. Fr. Alfred challenged participants to make concrete missionary commitments, extending their efforts beyond the Salesian circle.
This formation series will continue in the coming months, with scheduled encounters for the Cebu and Mindanao clusters, as the Salesian Family deepens its commitment to Don Bosco’s missionary vision.
