A long-awaited celebration
The jubilee week brings together more than 300 people, including religious, pastoral workers, indigenous communities, authorities and the local population. Around 130 representatives of Salesian communities and friends of the mission are participating, together with 80 Christian animators from seven Amazonian ethnic groups accompanied by the work.
The organisation began almost a year earlier, with the support of some 60 collaborators distributed among various committees. The programme was developed in three dimensions: formative, with spaces for reflection and missionary assembly; cultural, with exhibitions, recognitions and a gastronomic fair; and celebratory, with processions, liturgies and artistic presentations.
Let the celebrations begin!
The activities began with a solemn Eucharist in the Cathedral of Yurimaguas. Fr Walter Cahuaza, Vicar General, presided over the celebration and recalled a phrase of Don Bosco: ‘It is not enough to love young people, they need to feel loved.’ He emphasised that Christian charity must be expressed in concrete accompaniment of children and young people.
At the end, Fr Fidelius-Marie Adjanohoun thanked the Apostolic Vicariate for welcoming the Salesian mission, emphasising that this celebration belongs not only to the Salesians but to the whole local Church.
The Marañón River bears witness to Salesian joy
After a ten-hour journey along the Marañón River, the delegations arrived in San Lorenzo, where the ‘Puerto Parroquia’ welcomed them with music, singing and enthusiasm. The Symphonic Band of the San Juan Bosco School in Ayacucho, Salesians from various works in the country, members of Caritas Yurimaguas, animators and families were welcomed. It was a true celebration of communion.
A Eucharist with an Amazonian face
A Eucharist marked by gratitude was celebrated in the parish of San Lorenzo Mártir. Fr Diego Clavijo recalled the first missionary expedition, lived with enthusiasm and uncertainty, always trusting that the mission is born of Jesus and built in community. Permanent deacons from the Achuar communities of Datem del Marañón participated.
Fr Fidelius emphasised that the mission extends over more than forty kilometres and is sustained thanks to the joint work of priests, permanent deacons and animators. He also thanked Fr Reginaldo Cordeiro, sent from Rome on behalf of the Rector Major, for his presence.
Missionary Assembly
More than 120 missionaries and animators gathered at the Reverendo Padre Cayetano Ardanza Institute to strengthen their commitment. Fr Juan Pablo Alcas, Provincial; Bishop Martín Quijano, Bishop of the Vicariate of Pucallpa; and Fr Reginaldo Cordeiro, representative of the Rector Major, Fr Fabio Attard, and member of the Dicastery for Missions, participated.
Fr Alcas invited everyone to experience the meeting as an opportunity to listen once again to the voice of God. Bishop Quijano reminded everyone that ‘the heart of the Church is mission’. Finally, Fr Reginaldo said that ‘Mission begins with presence’, emphasising that evangelisation means building relationships of hope with the people.
Oratory Festival
It was a real celebration in the oratory, where children, young people, Salesians, parents and animators shared the traditional Umsha in a family spirit. Around the decorated tree, amid songs and dances, they expressed their gratitude for life and nature in an atmosphere of joy, fraternity and family.
