Veržej, Slovenia - August 2022 - While handicrafts and homemade crafts were once a source of livelihood for many, today only a few continue to do so, seeking to add an artistic and cultural touch to their handicrafts and link them to tourism. The Veržej Craft Center, which operates within the Salesian Marianum Institute in Veržej, has been connecting, supporting and promoting the craft heritage along the Mura River for years. In the spirit of the Salesian charism, it seeks to impart knowledge and values to the younger generation, thus educating not only about a profession and aptitude for work, but also encouraging young people to be creative and innovative. Young people are the main protagonists of the six films on craftsmanship along the Walls, produced as part of the "Promotion of Nature and Cultural Tourism" project. The short promotional films show the preparation of natural materials such as pellets, straw, iron, corn husk and clay for handicrafts. They present the area's most typical craft industries along the Mura River, and the encounters between children and skilled craftsmen, which are also encounters between generations, between past and present, between skill and art, add a familiar touch in the Slovenian dialect of this area. For the excellent idea of preserving and promoting handicrafts, credit goes to Ms. Iris Balažič, the director of the Veržej Handicraft Center, who, together with her hard-working colleagues, successfully completed the project, which was co-financed by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development (EAFRD) - European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development.
