Chile – Teacher training: transversal-management diploma for Salesian school leaders

22 December 2020

(ANS - Santiago) – In 2020 the Provincial Department for Education concentrated its work on a plan of formation and strengthening of skills, offering over a dozen diplomas and courses made available to the leaders and teaching teams of the Salesian schools along with workshops as part of fostering the network of Salesian schools in the country.

The Director of the Network of Salesian Schools, Juan Pablo Vásquez, reported that this great variety of formation is the result of the strategic planning established in 2019, thanks to a relationship with the Silva Henríquez Catholic University (UCSH), a Salesian insitute of higher education, and with other institutions, which have favored progress in the themes of continuing education.

One of the most important formation events that took place this year was the diploma course in transversal management for managers of Salesian schools held by teachers from the UCSH School of Philosophy. It was attended by 64 primary and junior high school teachers of the schools of Copiapó, Talca, Linares, Punta Arenas, and Santiago (Liceo Arriarán Barros and Oratorio Don Bosco). The first course, which started in August, ends in Jan,uary 2021.

On the morning of Friday 4 December, about 20 people, including pedagogical coordinators, professional technical coordinators, and directors and principals of the six schools that participated in the course, learned the results of the 2020 formation course presented by the UCSH teacher, prof. Pablo Solorzano.

On the occasion, some of the participants expressed their intention to recommend the same course to other colleagues of theirs, “because teachers must continually improve, and even more so the principals, whose role is fundamental in training people"; or, again, “because it is necessary to form good people, capable of making their contribution to society, of participating and giving the best of themselves.”

The online meeting concluded with the presentation of the course project for 2021, which is expected to be extended to new schools in the network, recognizing that moments of crisis, such as the current one, can offer opportunities to strengthen the professional skills of Salesian educators.
